Amec Foster Wheeler Environment & Infrastructure is seeking an entry level/junior Environmental Engineers in our Portland, Maine office. The work will involve remediation planning documents, engineering design, and construction support completed under the guidance of senior staff. The Amec Foster Wheeler Portland, Maine Office is a multi-disciplinary science/engineering/architecture team of 150+ staff that offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects for a wide range of clients throughout the US.
The ideal candidate will have a solid background in civil/environmental or chemical engineering as well as excellent interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and will be a proactive problem solver.
Key Responsibilities The position will involve all facets of environmental remediation including, but not limited to, remediation feasibility studies, remedial investigations, remedial design of treatment facilities, and operation and maintenance support. This position offers the opportunity to work with, learn from, and be mentored by senior engineering staff while executing the following roles/responsibilities:
•Contact remediation vendors to discuss technical approaches and solicit budget pricing. •Research literature and regulatory requirements •Prepare spreadsheets and perform environmental calculations to support operation and maintenance, and design activities •Perform environmental field sampling •Prepare and generate routine reports and correspondence •Contribute to preparing more complex reports: provide proposal input, develop soil and groundwater remediation feasibility studies, decision documents, and implementation plans •Prepare design drawings and specifications as a member of a design team, or in support of more senior staff •Review and compile field and laboratory data, and conduct engineering analyses for design of geotechnical, civil, environmental construction projects •Complete projects in a timely and accurate manner. Work outside of normal work hours may be required on occasion
Skills / Qualifications
Required •BS in Civil/Environmental/Chemical Engineering •0 to 5 years of engineering or construction experience with a focus on environmental applications in site remediation, wastewater treatment, or similar •Interest/aptitude in site remediation and construction •Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification •Strong written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills •Demonstrated professional judgment, consistency and attention to detail •Strong computer skills •Ability and willingness to travel to project sites. Anticipated travel expected to be less than 10% overnight travel; however, extended travel up to two weeks is possible at times •Adaptability and willingness to adjust to client needs •Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours if required •Must pass drug test, physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy
Preferred •MS in Civil/Environmental/Chemical Engineering •Environmental experience related to contamination assessment and remedial construction •Construction inspection/oversight experience •Experience/interest in geology/hydrogeology and/or chemistry •Experience with sediment investigation or remediation •Experience in preparing cost estimates •40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER Training •Ability to work both independently and as part of a team •Self-starter and lifelong learner
Physical Demands •Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions on uneven terrain •May lift equipment and carry laboratory samples, which require the ability to lift up to 40 pounds •Office/Field work with computer
