Department: Construction Materials & Engineering (Wind Energy) FLSA Status: Full-Time, Hourly/Non-Exempt EEO Classification: Technicians Purpose of this Position The primary function of the Wind Energy Lead Technician is to provide construction representative services on large renewable energy projects. We are looking for mid-level experienced individuals to lead a small team in performing construction materials field testing duties for soils and concrete. Applicant must have strong initiative, detail oriented, and able to pass/obtain industry certifications/exams. Locations are remote and can be anywhere in North America (primarily USA). This position reports to the Element Project Manager, who is a licensed engineer. The work schedule may be variable, including nights and weekends. This position requires extended periods away from Element’s St. Paul office in accordance with project schedule. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Prepare project trailer, equipment and truck(s) prior to mobilization and upon arrival to the job site.
- Review/monitor construction activity within our scope of work, including quality of work, and prepare daily reports to document construction progress and activities.
- Assign daily work to test technicians. Manage and review their progress vs. expectations.
- Manage the on-site progress to achieve assigned KPIs (such as weekly overtime, on-time delivery, customer satisfaction, etc.)
- Coordinate sample collections and testing with site contractors to minimize interruption of schedule.
- Set up, conduct and analyze standard field and lab tests following prescribed procedures.
- Field testing and procedures include but are not limited to identification of varying soil types, observations of shallow foundations and road subgrade, backfill compaction by method of nuclear density gauge, and penetrometer tests. Field testing for concrete includes but is not limited to testing of plastic concrete for air content, slump, temperature, and casting concrete cylinders.
- Laboratory testing and procedures include but are not limited to Standard and Modified Proctors, sieve analysis, Atterberg Limits, compression testing of concrete cylinders.
- Solve technical problems using application of standard techniques.
- Review all on-site test results before submission to Project Manager or client. Examine and analyze test results and explain unusual findings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities Will lead and coordinate materials testing technicians, the tests they perform, and developing work schedules on site according to project demands. Physical Demands - Frequency of required physical force: Occasional (moderate).
- Lifting requirements: lifting 50 lbs. sporadically.
- Ability to stand on feet for long periods of time.
- Work is primarily performed outdoors and may include walking on uneven terrain.
Other Skills and Abilities - Ability to document complete job including notes on client contacts, action in the field, subsequent laboratory tests with dates and times noted for review purposes.
- Ability to maintain a tactful attitude and maintain good relationships with project engineers, owners, and contractors.
- Ability to talk knowledgeably to project engineers and/or contractor about the jobs as required concerning work progress and necessary recommendations.
- Ability to accurately and fluently convey thoughts orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate a company vehicle within company policy. A valid driver’s license and safe driving record are required.
- Ability to determine types of testing to conduct.
- Select representative samples so as to assure reliable results.
- Inform Project Manager and clients (as required) when conditions are nonconforming.
- Ability to ensure compliance with Element and client-specific safety policies, company policies and procedures, and state and federal laws.
- Ability to work in a challenging environment.
- Ability to make decisions independently and resolve unforeseen issues which may arise (consult project manager as needed).
- Possess communication skills for daily interaction with client, team members and other on-site personnel.
- Provide daily field reports to Project Manager.
