DEFINITION: Perform a wide variety of advanced and skilled technical duties related to the operation and maintenance of the Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection, and Stormwater systems.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Employees working in this career level job classification perform a variety of advanced technical tasks related to the operation and maintenance of distribution, collection, and stormwater systems. Water Utility Technician Lead employees are expected to work in a self-directed manner and to provide leadership on some projects. Project leadership requires active and independent learning skills, and the ability to review construction records and documents, conduct technology reviews, and effectively troubleshoot problems. Employee must also demonstrate strong collaboration skills with other employees to address shared work assignments and to facilitate sharing and acting upon critical information. Examples of tasks and duties for which experience must be demonstrated include but are not limited to the following, in addition to those of the Water Utility Tech: performing work as a lead or on a crew working on pipelines and appurtenances, pumps and valves, including lift stations, work on remote monitoring equipment, regulatory instruments and metering equipment. Perform utility locate work. Research technical problems using vendor manuals and internet searches. Help Supervisors with laying out projects and coordinating employee and contractor work. Assist with development of standard operating procedures and checklists. Assist with overall setup and deployment of the computerized work management system including entering equipment name plate information, scheduling maintenance tasks recommended by equipment manufacturer, and opening and closing work orders. Assist contractors and City approved service providers with and constructions projects as assigned. Perform/lead after hours emergency repair crews, respond within designated time frame. Repair and replace meters, Perform grounds and easement maintenance such as weed cutting, mowing and edging, snow and trash removal, and fence and gate repairs. Assist with street maintenance projects and operations as assigned.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed outside and inside both night and day shifts, under varying and extreme weather conditions. Work includes exposure to noise, dust, gases and oils, solvents and chemicals. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs and body is needed. Position requires the ability to work under time constraints and in confined spaces and the use of respirators.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade plus three years of experience performing distribution, collection, and stormwater system repair, installation, and maintenance. Special Qualifications: Possession of Class “B” Colorado CDL with “N” Tanker endorsement within six months of employment. Must possess either a Class 4 Distribution and Class 3 Collection Certification or a Class 3 Distribution and Class 4 Collection Certification, or ability to obtain during probationary period. Water or Wastewater treatment operators certificates may be accepted in place of the lower of the two required certifications depending on assignment. Candidates are expected to progress to level 4 certifications in both distribution and collection within established time frames.
Selection process will include complete job description review, personal interview, physical abilities test, drug screen, and criminal background check. CDL holders will be required to complete the FMCSR disclosure form.
