Pfizer is making significant investment in the creation of novel, first-in-class therapeutics, by combining internal discovery and validation of drug targets with external partnerships to produce clinical drug candidates for the Pfizer pipeline. This position is within the Target Sciences (TS) group, which has expertise in human genetics, functional genomics, computational biology and data management, and target validation biology. TS works together with Pfizer’s nationwide Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI) within the broader External Science & Innovation division of World R&D to deliver novel, innovative pipeline candidates based on emerging science. A particular area of emphasis is the proactive seeding of new multi-investigator academic collaborations, centered on areas of emerging science including oncology and immunology and designed to deliver new target hypotheses for Pfizer’s next generations of therapeutics.
The primary responsibility for this position is to generate and validate new target hypotheses for drug discovery based on human biology, by integrating population genetics, rare variant and familial genetics, protein and message expression in human tissue, and contextual literature information. Sources are public data, commissioned data, internal clinical data, and existing networks of academic partnerships focused on disease mechanisms of highest priority. An additional responsibility is the hands-on application of genetics and computational methods, together with TS colleagues, to evaluate new and prioritize existing drug discovery programs in CTI. Finally, the successful applicant will cooperate with TS colleagues to enable the next generation of genotype-phenotype population genetic resources critical to support emerging science hypotheses. The position requires deep expertise in human genetics and computational methods, understanding of molecular mechanisms of disease, and the ability to represent Pfizer externally and TS internally to translate emerging science into targets ready to enter the pipeline.
Set and execute the strategy to apply genetic and computational capabilities of TS to evaluate potential external academic partnerships in areas of highest-interest breaking biology, including in innate immunity, microsatellite repeat expansion diseases, and tumor-specific oncology targets.
Set and execute the strategy to apply genetic and computational capabilities of TS to accelerate and validate the production of new target hypotheses from existing academic networks, particularly in the areas of autoimmune mechanisms and rare disease.
Lead Pfizer’s interaction with one or more genetics-focused partnerships with individual external academic or medical investigators aimed at producing novel target hypotheses. Execute genetic analyses to produce new target hypotheses, and integrate with the broader TS group to build confidence in rationale for new target hypotheses.
Work with TS colleagues to identify opportunities to apply genetics and computation to increase confidence in rationale for current and potential drug discovery programs executed by Pfizer’s CTI, and execute appropriate analyses. Work with CTI and with scouting groups to evaluate new programs based on data including human genetics.
Execute the next generation of genotype-phenotype population resources in academic-nonprofit partnerships, together with TS colleagues, particularly in enabling Pfizer’s membership in the FinnGen consortium.
Collaborate successfully within a dynamic and agile TS group and contribute as needed to the broader remit of producing and validating hypotheses from emerging science for new targets to treat disease with first-in-class drugs and developing the appropriate resources.
PhD in genetics or closely-related discipline plus six years’ additional experience in medical, biological, or drug discovery fields.
Expert in hands-on computational techniques sufficient to work with, operationalize, and interpret genetic datasets, cell-based expression datasets, disease registries, health records, and other datasets.
Wide medical knowledge of disease biology.
Proficiency in programming, scripting, querying or statistical analysis languages such as R, Python, PERL, SQL
Facility with analysis of eQTLs and pQTLs and their use for target identification and validation.
Strong knowledge of cellular and molecular biology and how molecular pathogenicity contributes to disease mechanisms, particularly in autoimmune disease and oncology.
Proficiency in statistical methods sufficient to leverage the skills of professional statisticians.
Ability to represent Pfizer in evaluating and executing partnerships with academic and medical investigators.
Excellent collaboration, communication, and leadership skills, and ability and desire to work independently as part of a team dedicated to innovation.
Track record of relevant high-impact publications
MD / PhD degree
Postdoctoral training in genetics, computation, or a complementary field.
Expertise in oncology, immunology, or both.
Experience in the use of genetics and computation within a drug discovery organization.
