NRU is a non-profit trade association, formed in 2002, located in Portland Oregon and represents the interests of 53 public power distribution utilities in the Northwest that rely upon the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) as their primary or exclusive supplier of wholesale electric energy and related Network transmission service. In aggregate NRU members serve nearly 600,000 customers, supplying more than 16 million MWh of annual energy sales, accounting for over $1 billion in annual revenue. NRU member systems vary in size from 3 aMW up to 160 aMW and include Municipals, PUDs, Cooperatives and Tribal utilities. Many of the NRU members serve rural areas.
NRU has an annual budget of approximately $1,300,000 and a staff of 4 full-time employees. In 2007, NRU established NRU Consulting Services, LLC, to provide technical support and information sharing for participating NRU members wishing to procure future power products or other related services to serve anticipated load growth. NRU also provides staff support services to Northwest Irrigation Utilities, an association of a subset of NRU members.
Pursuant to the Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation of NRU, each member serves on the Board of Directors, which provides overall policy direction for NRU. The Board President, together with the Officers and an 11 member Executive Committee, exercise general supervision over the more significant matters of policy affecting NRU. The Chief Executive Officer is appointed by the Board to provide oversight and management of the business affairs of NRU, as generally described below and consistent with NRU’s Mission Statement.
Mission Statement: “NRU advocates on behalf of its members for cost-effective and reliable wholesale power supply and transmission service (including transfer service) from BPA. NRU educates and informs members about BPA and other regional power supply and transmission issues.
