Reporting to the Director, Civil & Structural Design, the Manager, Structural Engineering will complete and manage Metra's Bridge Modernization Plan and manage the FRA mandated Bridge Management Plan for the safe operation of over 800 railroad bridges; supervise staff conducting structural inspections; and coordinate structural design and review for facilities throughout the Metra system.
Develop and review plans, specifications, and independent cost estimates for contractual work; examine consultant documents for accuracy, constructability, and conformity to contractual requirements; and review and approve invoices for payment. Manage and track contract funds to ensure availability, monitor expiring contracts and request extensions or new agreements, and ensure adherence to Disadvantage Business Enterprise (DBE) goals. Maintain Metra's Bridge Management Program coordinating annual bridge inspections, audits, ratings, and heavy load clearance ensuring bridges comply with safety standard and meet all the requirements of the Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) mandated Bridge Management Plan. Plan the technical scope, schedule, and staffing for assigned structural engineering projects; and coordinate work with various departments, monitor progress, and ensure projects remains on schedule and within budget. Determine forces and stresses in structural bridge elements; prescribe safe structural loading conditions, bridge inspection, and maintenance procedures; and design bridge repairs and modifications.
1.) Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
2.) Must have seven (7) years of Structural Engineering experience in the design of bridges, buildings, and related structures; preferably for railroad facilities. Three (3) of years must include indirect supervisory experience.
3.) Must be a licensed Structural Engineer in the State of Illinois.
4.) Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois in addition to the SE license is preferred.
5.) Must possess and maintain a valid State of Illinois Driver's license. Must be willing to travel within and outside Metra’s 6-county region.
6.) Considerable knowledge of the principles, theories, and methods of structural engineering.
7.) Considerable knowledge of bridge engineering design, construction, and maintenance principles and practices.
8.) Considerable knowledge of modern construction methods, materials, and equipment.
9.) Good knowledge of infrastructure systems.
