Develops and directs proactive communications, marketing and public outreach efforts aimed at promoting WRF as the leader on scientifically sound research and innovation to support the water sector. Leads the Communications and Marketing team to produce the highest quality products and deliverables.
This position may be located in Denver, CO or Alexandria, VA.
Essential Job Functions
Oversees all WRF communications to build and strengthen relationships with external partners, subscribers, and the media.
Leads communication and marketing staff in two geographic locations to promote a culture of high performance and continuous business process improvement within the team, including assessing resource needs and gaps, managing team priorities and department budget.
Works closely with CEO and WRF Leadership Team to oversee editorial direction and design of WRF communications, marketing, and public/media relations materials.
Oversees messaging on WRF website and social media, ensuring effectiveness, managing content, and coordinating with staff on website needs.
Oversees development and execution of marketing and promotion for WRF events such as workshops and webcasts.
Serves as senior press officer for the Foundation. Coordinates media interviews with the CEO and appropriate Foundation staff and assists with preparation of talking points, guidance and training. Oversees development and implementation of WRF press strategy.
Oversees development of messaging targeted to key audiences including Congress, federal and state regulators, existing and prospective subscribers, traditional and non-traditional partners and the media.
Contributes to the editing and publishing of the Foundation’s knowledge content to meet the needs of various levels of understanding within the water industry.
Utilizes marketing analytics to objectively track WRF progress in effectively implementing integrated marketing, communications, and promotional activities that drive subscriber value and revenue generation.
Collaborates with and manages third party marketing/communication vendors, monitoring projects through all phases of production.
Keeps informed of developments in the fields of marketing, communications/public relations, and association trends to continuously improve Foundation communications and marketing efforts.
Leverages communications and outreach initiatives of water sector partners as appropriate, to more effectively and efficiently advance common goals and generate greater value.
Establishes and develops professional relationships with communications personnel at federal, state, partner, and subscriber organizations; identifies appropriate target audiences and strategies for communication of WRF’s research and innovation programs.
Demonstrated success in leadership of staff to meet strategic organizational goals related to communications and marketing.
Exceptional communication (oral and written), creative, strategic, analytical, and organizational skills.
Highly collaborative style. Extensive experience developing and implementing strategic communication strategies for professional organizations.
Excellent project management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, with keen attention to detail, deadlines, and timelines, and produce high quality work products.
Ability to work effectively and contribute to a collaborative, team environment.
Ability to assess and lead use of social media and networking tools, including upcoming newer platforms as they become available.
Extensive experience communicating complex topics at different technical levels to various audiences.
Proficiency in computer programs such as MS-Word®, PowerPoint®, Drupal™ and an association management system.
Bachelor’s degree required, with focus in journalism, communications, marketing, or public relations. Graduate degree in a related field is desirable.
Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) credential preferred.
Advanced training in technical writing preferred.
Work Experience Required
Minimum of 5-years’ experience leading the design and execution of communications, marketing, and public relations activities with demonstrated success.
Experience in leading diverse staff to create supportive and high performing teams.
Experience as a media spokesperson.
Demonstrated successful experience writing press releases, making presentations, and working with major media outlets.
Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications.
Portfolio of published communications.
Strong track record as a leader with demonstrated success in managing a variety of concurrent initiatives.
Water sector experience or experience in another technical area strongly preferred.
Expect to be based out of one office (either Alexandria, VA or Denver, CO) with regular travel to the other office.
Approximately 25% travel is required.
