Positions supervised: Manager Codes and Standards; Director Publications; Program Manager, Technical Services
Position description: This position serves as the primary technical representative of PCI responsible for processes to develop, review, and disseminate technical knowledge for the precast concrete industry and for specifying entities. As such, there will be an expectation to build the credibility of PCI as a technical institute through professional approaches to development and dissemination of technical information as well as relevant and visible participation in other organizations.
Specific Internal Responsibilities
Technical Activities Council: Advise and assist the council to maintain the credibility and consistency of technical information for the industry through strategic document development and critical, in-depth document review. Facilitate strategic prioritization of technical committee work.
Technical Committees: Act as staff liaison to, or assure adequate staff interaction with, technical committees to support the work of the committees in accordance with the Institute Strategic plan and Technical Activities Council priorities.
Of importance is the development of an update to the PCI Design Handbook. Production deadlines must be met to assure coordination with milestones for code development.
Codes and Standards: Support and advise the Manager of Codes and Standards to assure strategic development of appropriate standards and to assure adherence to proper standards development processes as defined in the ANSI accredited PCI standardization process. The work of the Manager of Codes and Standards will be limited to the development of the Precast Concrete Design Standard, processing PCI standards through the Standards Committee, and processing model code change proposals. Standards themselves, other than the Design Standard, will be developed by PCI technical committees.
The management of codes consultants must be coordinated with the Manager of Codes and Standards.
Production Department: Work with the Director of Publications to provide technical support for processing technical documents including the PCI Journal, ASPIRE, and all technical documents developed in technical committee.
Research and Development Council: Advise and assist the Council to develop strategic direction for identifying research needs. Manage processes to execute research projects through universities and research agencies. Manage processes for review and dissemination of research project deliverables. Facilitate the work of the Innovation Committee to identify long term objective to benefit the precast concrete industry.
Operations: Develop and manage annual budgets for Technical Services, Publications, and Research.
Respond to technical inquiries.
Specific External Responsibilities
ACI: There will be an expectation to become involved with ACI technical committees that may influence the precast concrete industry. This must be coordinated with the Manager of Codes and Standards to assure proper coverage of committees.
ASCE: As cycles allow, there will be an expectation to become involved with ASCE 7 and subcommittees that may influence the precast concrete industry.
BSSC: As necessary, there will be an expectation to monitor or participate in the activities of the Building Seismic Safety Council.
fib: As budget allows, there will be an expectation to monitor or participate in the activities of fib Commission 6 on precast concrete.
BS Engineering with structures emphasis; M.S. Engineering preferred
E. or S.E. required.
Minimum ten years’ experience working as a precast specialty engineer providing structural engineering services to precast concrete producers or working as an engineer for a Producer and being active on PCI Technical Committees, with an emphasis on non-transportation engineering and projects (parking structures, commercial, multi-story residential, institutional, etc.)
Demonstrated technical writing capability.
Demonstrated experience in research in precast concrete.
Excellent communication skills.
Experience working in the PCI technical committee structure.
Position requires location in the Chicago metropolitan area
