POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for performing a variety of activities related to the operation and maintenance of the 4 mgd treatment plant, 15 sanitary lift stations and 1 stormwater pump station. Position is FLSA non-exempt. Position reports to Wastewater Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Observes plant and lift station operations and checks for potential issues/problems. Reads meters, gauges, charts and instruments and documents all required information. Performs preventative maintenance on plant and lift station equipment. Repairs and replaces pumps and motors, electrical panels, controls, and related mechanical equipment. Cleans, lubricates and changes component parts and otherwise maintains process monitoring and control systems. Performs record keeping functions such as logging information regarding plant operation, test results from process lab, maintenance work performed and unusual operating conditions. Assists with equipment replacement and/or installation projects. Takes samples of wastewater, scum, grit, sludge and other materials and properly records chain of custody information; assists and may run process lab testing to determine efficiency of treatment processes. Reads diagrams, blueprints, specifications and manuals for installation and repair projects. Performs grounds and facilities maintenance and cleaning activities as required. Updates supervisor and staff regarding work assignment status in a prompt and courteous manner. Maintains and services equipment and hand and power tools; maintains inventory of frequently used supplies and parts. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team. Drives Village vehicles to work sites and transports materials as required. Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment. The position requires weekend duty and work on Holidays on a rotational basis and availability for after-hours emergency situations.
Required Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of: Operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, valves, control systems. Record keeping principles and practices. Concepts, materials and terminology related to wastewater operations. Principles and practices of laboratory testing. Occupational hazards and applicable safety practices. Tools, equipment, practices and methods used in installing, maintaining and repairing industrial equipment. Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment. Record keeping principles and practices; correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation. Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
Skill In: Maintaining accurate and complete records on repair and maintenance of equipment. Calibrating, aligning and testing a variety of processes, equipment, instruments systems. Analyzing and evaluating chemical, biological and physical data and advising and coordinating appropriate corrective action when necessary. Identifying and resolving operational, technical and procedural problems. Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. Preparing clear and concise written reports and activity records. Operating an assortment of measurement tools, sampling equipment and laboratory instrumentation. Reading, interpreting and understanding technical manuals and electronic schematics, drawings and diagrams. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintaining accurate inventory of parts and tools in stock.

High school diploma/GED and two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and operation of wastewater treatment facilities; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Illinois Class D Driver’s license and minimum Illinois EPA Class 4 Wastewater Operator’s license required.
