This internship is designed to provide an introduction to various aspects of design and construction of a large infrastructure project at a public transportation agency. Two positions will be filled to provide support for both the South Central/Downtown Hub Light Rail Extension and the Northwest Phase II Light Rail Extension project teams. This position will perform tasks such as field observation and photo documentation, processing construction submittals and requests for information, preparing presentations, performing basic research, tracking project documentation, preparing meeting minutes, and other tasks as assigned. Having the Intern positions filled will relieve Valley Metro's construction team staff to do more advanced construction and engineering tasks and help to complete these tasks on time. The interns will report to and primarily work out of the South Central/Downtown Hub and Northwest Phase II project field offices.
Each internship will be up to 12 months in length and begin July 2021.
These internships are part-time temporary (Commitment to work up to 19.5 hours per week during the school year) for up to 12 months. Some positions may be limited to the summer months only. Schedules are flexible to accommodate full-time course load. Additional hours up to 40 hours per week may be available during the summer months).
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES / KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Assists in and participates in high capacity / light rail transit corridor planning studies. Assists in preparation of short-term special studies and environmental, social, and economic impact statements. Assists in the implementation of mitigation measures associated with environmental impacts. Performs transit research, including site visits. Performs peer city research on various transit issues. Participates in public meetings on transit programs and related issues. Provides bus/rail service planning and technical assistance. Investigates citizen suggestions and complaints. Assists planning staff in production of documents such as the Short Range Transit Report, the transit element of the Transportation Improvement Plan, the Transit Life Cycle Program, among others. Works with Valley Metro staff, city staffs, and consultants on transit planning issues. Coordinates activities with other internal divisions. Independently works on assigned task and projects. Performs other duties of similar nature and level as assigned.
Knowledge of: Transit planning principles and practices; Report preparation methods; Customer service principles.
Skill in: Conducting transit studies and research; Preparing a variety of business correspondence and reports; Providing customer service; Using a computer and related software applications; Analyzing, evaluating, and identifying complex transit issues; Coordinating activities between multiple departments; Communicating in order to interact with coworkers, supervisor, and the general public at a level sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction; Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.) required; Knowledge of GIS preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree program in Urban Planning, Geography, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Public Administration or a related field; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties such as those listed above. A student currently enrolled in a Master's Degree program is preferred.
Valid Arizona Driver's License is required.
