The Data Science & Platform Engineering Department leads the development of Benson Hill’s crop design platform, CropOS™ which combines machine learning and big data with genome editing and plant biology to accelerate and simplify the product development process. The team partners with the Research & Development teams on the development of a portfolio of offerings (commercial, product, or platform related) that meet the needs of Benson Hill’s business units.
We are actively seeking an innovative Senior Data Scientist with background in image analysis, computer vision and machine learning to join our rapidly growing CropOS Department. The candidate will have in-depth understanding of practical imaging applications, sensors & techniques and be able to independently create engineered technical solutions to a wide range of applied imaging problems requiring collaboration with key stakeholders.
(Essential Duties and Responsibilities)
Work closely with plant scientists, laboratory managers, software engineers and data scientists in a dynamic research environment
Design and implement sophisticated end-to-end solutions for hyperspectral and NIR image-based solutions for that will supplement wet lab assays.
Contribute to projects that use statistical modeling and other analytics solutions in the CropOS food Innovations data science team.
Identify opportunities for innovation and business improvements through applications of data science
Effectively communicate results in written and visual format to other scientists and project stakeholders.
Keep up with state-of-the-art methods in deep learning and apply them to improve and create new solutions
(Competencies and Qualifications)
PhD with 5 or Master’s with 8 years of experience applying machine learning methodology across multiple domains and with a variety of business objectives.
Graduate education in Image Analysis, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Pattern Recognition, Computational Photography, Machine Vision or Artificial Intelligence.
Knowledge of advanced machine learning, classification, clustering and statistical approaches.
Expertise in image data collection, feature extraction and development of ML models based on image data.
Experience in benchmarking and model performance evaluation and improvement.
Experience organizing and planning complex projects and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work setting.
Fluency in Python, R or other programming and scripting languages.
Experience using a variety of ML packages and libraries such as scikit-image, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, etc.
Experience in Computer Vision, Convolutional Neural Networks, Deep Learning and Generative Models for Imaging Applications.
Experience with application of machine learning to hyperspectral and near-infrared (NIR) image data.
Experience working with containerized applications and orchestration such as Docker Swarm , Kubernetes and Airflow.
Experience with cloud-based AI platforms such as Domino Data Lab, Amazon Sagemaker, Vertex AI or others.
Familiarity with data engineering, data storage methodologies and technology platforms.
