Position Title: Assistant Vice President of Accounting
Reports To: Vice President of Finance
FLSA Status: Exempt
Basic Functions: Ensures that the company’s accounting function runs smoothly, and all the accounting records are kept appropriately. Sets strategy and direction for the accounting team and interactions with support functions. Responsible for compliance with GAAP accounting and financial reporting, internal controls monitoring, data governance and financial reporting governance, and accounts payable. Responsible for all aspects of the General Ledger and financial close process including reconciliation and accuracy of all critical transactions. Evaluates, advises senior management, and implements the impact of future GAAP, GASB and other regulatory standards. Ensures updated key policies and procedures are in place and business processes are properly aligned with AMP policy. Regularly performs an analysis and evaluation of regulatory assets and liabilities, asset retirement obligations and reserves. Must value accuracy, consistency, and transparency. Must model commitment, accountability, and positive energy to produce high-quality results. Leads a designated team for internal and external audit functions.
Essential Functions:
1. Provides high level of subject matter expertise of accounting transactions and General Ledger management, internal consultation on the best practices to obtain, evaluate, interpret, record, and analyze accounting data utilized in the preparation of financial statements.
2. Works with internal and external sources to leverage the Oracle E-Business system, ensure data accuracy, consistency, transparency, and proper understanding and reporting of accounting data.
3. Understands and participates in the development of controls over financial reporting.
4. Journal entry review and approval including allocation methods.
5. Identifies, prioritizes, assesses, measures, manages, monitors, and reports on financial reporting risk.
6. Identifies and remediates internal control deficiencies through root cause analyses.
7. Oversight regarding the establishment and adherence to accounting policies and the implementation of new accounting policies based on emerging guidance and new initiatives.
8. Manages compliance and monitoring process and informs Vice President of Finance and other interested parties of important developments and decisions.
9. Effectively and successfully leads and develops accounting staff of 10-11.
10. Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills and is responsible to make effective presentations to the Board of Trustees and Senior Management.
11. Provides expertise regarding complex cross-functional projects and other activities that support strategic initiatives.
12. Experience maintaining general and subsidiary ledgers under GAAP using the FERC Uniform System of Accounts is required. Position will monitor project, program results, and ensure reconciliation and analysis of account balances is completed in a timely manner.
13. Previous demonstrated expertise using ERP systems, strong technical skills with respect to the application of principles and practices specific to project accounting, construction work in process and capitalization is also required.
14. Knowledge, Skills, & Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required, CPA preferred.
2. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an accounting management role; experience to include a flexible interpersonal style to help build a cohesive team; using appropriate methods to focus and guide others; and facilitate the completion of team goals and work objectives.
3. Expert ability to understand and navigate accounting and financial systems to extract relevant information; assesses and monitors technology risks and associated issues with automated vs. manual business processes; determines the sufficiency of existing technology and drives new technology initiatives to meet business requirements and add value to the accounting operations of the company by leveraging system capabilities.
