Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. We are seeking a Non-destructive Assay R&D Engineer at either level 2 or 3 to join the Nuclear Materials Support Service (NPI-9) group to support either day or swing shift operations. You will report to the Technical Support Team First Line Manager and be responsible for supporting a large variety of NDA processes and operations within multiple locations at the plutonium facility. We will rely on you to:
Work with other engineers/researchers and technicians to operate, maintain and troubleshoot NDA equipment used for measuring special nuclear materials (SNM)
Manage and coordinate NDA equipment repair and maintenance at LANL
Help develop, implement and keep current all new NDA processes to provide solutions for future NDA measurement needs
Help solve engineering problems while maintaining designated equipment for NDA operations and provide peer review of the work across organizations
Assist in the development of technical journal papers and reports and the development of intellectual property
Scope tasks within a project and define deliverables at task level
More experienced candidates may also identify ideas for improving NDA operations, lead specific project tasks and mentor junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth
BS degree in Engineering, at least 1 year of nuclear experience and 4-6 years of related experience (master’s or Ph.D. preferred)
2-5 years of professional level experience using one of the following NDA systems; passive/active neutron counters, tomographic gamma-scanning, far-field gamma spectroscopy, isotopic gamma-ray measurement systems or calorimetry systems
Demonstrated knowledge of statistical methods used for NDA data analysis methods and ability to develop technical journal papers and reports
Strong skills and initiative in organization, planning, teamwork, customer interactions and interpersonal communications
Demonstrated experience in conducting scientific/engineering work while complying with ES&H requirements and using appropriate administrative controls, engineering controls and PPE
Desired Qualifications – not required.
Experience using any of the following NDA data acquisition/analysis/modeling software is preferred: INCC, FRAM, Maestro, Program Isotopic, SNAP, Peak Easy, Peak Doctor, GADRAS, ISOCS or MCNP programs
Active DOE level Q L or Q or Q/SCI clearance
