The Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering in Indianapolis is seeking an exceptional scholar, educator, visionary, and dynamic leader to serve as Professor and Founding Chair of a new Department of Computer Science. The creation of this department is part of a bold vision to transform Indiana University Indianapolis into the state's next-generation urban research university. This presents a unique opportunity to shape and build a cutting-edge department, while also contributing to the strategic growth and expansion of Indiana University's premier urban research campus.  The Luddy Department of Computer Science is a strategic priority for Indiana University Indianapolis [https://strategicplan.iupui.edu]. Its goal is to establish world-class and accessible computer science programs that will foster innovation, drive research excellence and economic development, and produce future leaders in the field, both for Indiana and beyond.

The Founding Chair will have the exceptional opportunity to shape the department's mission, establish its core values, expand a forward-looking, externally-funded research portfolio, and hire a cadre of at least five to seven new faculty, while building a curriculum that reflects the most relevant and cutting-edge knowledge and skills in emerging computer science areas. The new Department of Computer Science has currently eight new tenure-track faculty and one lecturer-track faculty, and offers a Bachelor, a Master and PhD in Computer Science. Current faculty research strengths include data mining, artificial intelligence, machine learning, sensor networks, trust and privacy, and cybersecurity.

We are seeking an individual with a clear vision for the future of computer science education and research, as well as a proven track record of leadership and academic excellence. The Founding Chair will have the support to recruit and grow a diverse and accomplished faculty team, bringing together experts in various subfields of computer science. Through collaborative and interdisciplinary efforts, the department will foster a vibrant academic environment that encourages cross-pollination of ideas and collaboration with other departments and industry partners. The Chair has the potential to leverage the strengths of the Luddy School, including: the Polis Center, the Luddy AI Institute, the Department of Human-Centered Computing, the Department of BioHealth Informatics, and the Department of Library and Information Science, the unique location in downtown Indianapolis, proximity to the IU School of Medicine, and nation-wide leadership in the health and life sciences.

The Ideal Candidate

• Full professor
• Experience providing leadership, building and managing effective teams of diverse individuals, and supervising and mentoring faculty and staff. Experience planning, building, and managing quality academic programs effectively and efficiently. Experience managing complex budgets.
• Ability to design, manage and grow research-driven and industry-oriented academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Keen interest in the development of quality and accessible undergraduate and graduate curricula.
• We seek candidates who have an active forward-looking research agenda, as evidenced by a history of peer-reviewed publications, grant proposal writing, and involvement in grant-supported research projects as Principal Investigator.
• Outstanding record conducting individual and collaborative research.
• Ability to communicate clearly and directly.

• D. in computer science or related field and relevant research training and experience.
• Demonstrated ability to develop a record of outstanding research productivity, to obtain external funding, to exhibit effective teaching, and to creatively adapt and diversify pedagogy for online or blended learning.
